Chapter 8

Harley honestly felt bad for Connor. Ever since that encounter with those spirits the previous week, Harley had been plagued by strange memories. They weren’t clear to him. They didn’t appear inside his head in high-definition, but the feelings associated with those memories were loud. It felt as if those memories were screaming at him. He was certain there were a few unknown men inside those memories, fragmented and blurry, but the one thing he couldn’t erase from his head was the view of something sharp and gleaming coming at him. Then that excruciating pain in his chest. He also recalled the blood. In addition, he felt a niggling sensation somewhere deep within him. He had no doubt there was someone important to him inside those memories, and based on the feelings he got from them, that person was someone he loved deeply.

“Babe.”

Connor’s voice next to Harley’s ear startled him out of his reverie. He could feel blood rushing up his neck and cheeks. He had acted like a horrible boyfriend to Connor, who had been patient with him. Even now, the angel was smiling at him in spite of the fact that he had been snapping at his poor boyfriend left and right over stupid little things for a week now.

“Hey, what’s up?”

Connor sat next to him on the couch in the living room. “Are you done with your research? It’s almost lunch time, and I don’t want you to go hungry.”

Harley beamed gratefully at him. “Almost done, but we can eat first. What do you have in mind?”

“Chinese?”

Harley chuckled. “Your favorite diner? Sounds good. Let me save my documents before we leave.”

Connor grinned widely. “Great.”

* * * *

A few minutes later, they started walking hand in hand to the Chinese diner, ten minutes from Harley’s house. Initially, they were both quiet. Then Harley noticed a barely concealed excitement on Connor’s face.

“Is something going on?”

Connor chortled. “Am I that obvious?”

“Kind of.”

Connor blushed. “We haven’t gone out for dinner dates for a week now. What do you think about doing that tonight? Then we can go to the bay area afterward.”

Harley arched an eyebrow at him. “What for?”

“The water lantern festival. It’s tonight.”

Harley was surprised to hear that. “I’ve never been to one. That will be fun.”

He must have said the right thing because Connor seemed thrilled. The angel slung one arm over Harley’s shoulders and pulled him close. “We can do that together.”

“Is the event environmentally friendly, though?”

Connor nodded. “I researched the organizer online. They will pick all the lanterns off the water once the candles are extinguished.”

“Perfect. Do we have to reserve tickets for us?”

“Done!”

Harley was taken aback. “How?”

“I did that last night with my power.”

“Abusing your power again?” Harley teased.

“It’s for a good cause.”

“Like what?”

“Putting a bright smile on my lovely boyfriend’s face.”

The gesture touched Harley. “Thank you. I guess I can let it slide just this once.”

Connor let out a loud guffaw. “How magnanimous of you!”

“I am, aren’t I?” Then Harley laughed along with Connor.
